The CHS was formed in 1968, by a group of concerned citizens after one of the oldest schoolhouses in Rhode Island, the Narragansett Indian Schoolhouse in Charlestown, was destroyed. In 2007, after decades of progress with its mission, and the lack of storage, display and meeting space, the CHS board undertook the planning, fundraising and construction of this new building on land donated by Community 2000, a private benefactor. In 2013, the doors of the new CHS Archive opened to the public. We are proud to display Charlestown’s unique and diverse history and fulfill our commitment to Learn, Teach and Preserve the History of Charlestown, Rhode Island.
We look forward to hearing from you. Please feel free to share your photos, personal histories and family stories with us. Thank you!
