Welcome to The Charlestown Historical Society

Thank you for visiting our website. We have been an active organization for over fifty years, committed to the preservation of Charlestown's history and its presentation to the public.

The CHS has been strengthened with new, active membership over the years, who commit their time, special talents and expertise to strengthen this organization.  Volunteer efforts range from historical research, organizing and cataloging of collections, Schoolhouse & Archive docents, oral histories, historic cemetery maintenance, techinical advice, event and display set-up and other various daily tasks.  We infite you to become a part of this worthy community of volunteers!

1838 District No. 2 Schoolhouse

The CHS Archive building houses historical, local collections and provides exhibitions and related information of the public.  All of Charlestown's historic villages (Carolina, Cross' Mills, Kenyon, Shannock and Quonochontaug) as well as Charletown's Native American heritage and WWII history is represented.  We are open from Memorial Day through September an during the off-season we are open by appointment.


Also situated on the grounds is the District No. 2 Schoolhouse, one of eight one-room schoolhouses located in Charlestown during the 1900's.  The schoolhouse was relocated fromt he Quonochontaug section of Charlestown in 1972, restored and opened to the puglic in 1973.


We hope you will consider becoming a member of the Charlestown Historical Society. A membership application is located on the Support page. As a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, we look to the community for support and volunteerism.
